Wheaton Library and Community Center

Silver Spring, MD

The new Wheaton Library & Community Recreation Center project features a reading room, a gym, an elevated track on the second level above the gym’s basketball courts, computer labs, an arts and crafts room, a pottery room, a vendor cafe, a weight room, an upper level Social Hall, a children’s library, a teen area, a used bookstore on the western side of the building behind the gym and a learning kitchen facility.  Outdoor features include an entry circle for drop offs of patrons or borrowed materials with handicapped parking in the center. A large green space to the north of the building will serve as a multipurpose field.

This project is a 2-story structural concrete and slab on deck steel framed building with green roof over a below grade parking structure built on rammed aggregate piers. The facility has cast in place storm water management tanks. The site work included relocating Hermitage Avenue, a new intersection and pedestrian interface at Arcola Ave, the construction of a 400’ long 16’ tall concrete screen wall and all associated storm water management site work.
