U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Replacement Facility

OVERVIEW

The new U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Replacement Facility Project includes approximately 1,000,000SF of new construction which consists of laboratory space, administrative offices and parking. Of the total square footage, approximately 35,000SF is designed as Bio-Safety Level 3 laboratory space. Additionally, approximately 20,000SF of the total square footage is designed for Bio-Safety Level 4 laboratory space. The new building will house approximately 1000 employees of the USAMRIID research group.

Specialized Engineering is responsible for monitoring Construction Quality Control (QC) and Special Inspections during the phases of construction as well as ensuring the project was built in accordance with the project plans, specifications, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regulations. The foundation systems consist of caissons and spread foundations bearing on rock layers. To ensure the concrete shafts will have proper bearing capacity, Specialized Engineering is providing down-hole inspections of caisson excavations.

Specialized Engineering is providing recommendations during the construction of the project. During the drilled pier construction, Professional Geologists from Specialized Engineering were able to minimize the costs of over excavation of rock that is suitable for the support of the foundations. Concrete placement techniques were reviewed and efficient strategy recommendations were presented that saved the Owner from costly processes and the Client/Contractor from schedule delays.

National Institute of Health (NIH) Porter Neuroscience Research Center (PNRC) – Phase 1

OVERVIEW

The NIH Porter Neuroscience Research Center (PNRC) project is a multi-disciplinary neuroscience research laboratory. The 548,114 SF Center includes over 420,000 SF of research laboratories, 12,000 SF of lab administrative offices, 80,000 SF of animal research facilities, an 8,000 SF auditorium, a 10,000 SF cafeteria, and 20,000 SF of public space/atrium.

National Institute of Health (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

OVERVIEW

NIH NIAID facility is a 100,000-square-foot building housing laboratory space of animal research, radiology equipment, mechanical space, and waste-handling area. It includes BSL-2 and BSL-3 Laboratory suites and a suite of laboratories designed to operate at BSL-4 that will occupy a small portion of the building.

E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse

OVERVIEW

The E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse project consists of the new construction of the largest courthouse construction project in Washington, DC within the last 50 years. The facility includes approximately 355,000SF. A 6-story annex was also constructed adjacent to the new courthouse for the General Services Administration (GSA). The annex connects to the courthouse by an atrium. The overall project includes nine (9) courtrooms, 19 judge chambers, nine (9) new courtrooms, 15 chambersets, and administrative office space.

U.S. Pentagon (Design/Build) Renovation Program

OVERVIEW

The U.S. Pentagon Renovation is a phased design/build project of over 4 million square feet of space at the existing facility. Once completed, all areas of the building will be in compliance with modern-day building, life safety, ADA and fire codes. Overall scope of the project includes removal of all hazardous materials, replacement of all building systems, the addition of new elevators and escalators to improve vertical circulation, installation of new security and telecommunications systems, and utilities for future occupation of the Pentagon’s basement and mezzanine. The project, underway since 1998, is on an accelerated schedule for completion in January 2011, four years sooner than originally planned.

Specialized Engineering is responsible for the collection of water and soil samples for analysis in order to determine the level of contaminates; and mold and fungi samples for haz-mat analysis.
